Road Safety Audit on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road

โครงการการตรวจสอบความปลอดภัยทางถนนบนถนนวิถาวดีรังสิต
Sponsor:  Toyota Motors Thailand, Co.Ltd
Status:  Completed
Project period:  2007

After an announcement made by  the government and Airports of Thailand (AOT) to move domestic flights and some international flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport back to the old airport in North Bangkok, the Ministry of Transport was assigned to prepare Don Mueang Airport for the reopening starting from 25 March 2007.  The use of existing facility would alleviate problems occurred during repairs and improvement of Suvarnabhumi Airport.  Even though only the domestic flights and some international flights will be operated at this old airport, there will be a substantial amount of road traffic using the route to Don Mueang due to the increasing number of passengers and demands and a lack of other transport links between the two airports.  Bangkok Highway District, Department of Highways was therefore assigned to improve road condition of a main route to Don Mueang Airport which is focused mainly on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road from Din Daeng to Anusorn-Satan Monument.

Road safety improvement is a major concern and is ranked as a top priority work to be done for this road section.  The budget to make an improvement of road safety on Vibhavadi Rangsit Rd. has been allocated by the Department of Highways.  However, it is necessary for the officers from the Bangkok Highway District, Department of Highways to have other viewpoints and alternatives on how to improve the road safety to maintain a level of safety for the current and future use of the road.

Considering that the social contribution is one of the major management policies of the company, the Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd. which is a private industrial sector should play a major role in providing safety environment for all road users.  The Toyota social contribution plan could in turn prevent any further accident, by collaborating with the Thailand Accident Research Center (TARC), Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) to perform technical supports on Road Safety Improvement. Major tasks can be divided into two parts. The first part is to perform “Road Safety Audit” on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road (Din Daeng to Anusorn-Satan Monument). After finishing all audit processes and safety recommendations, TARC will assist Bangkok Highway District, Department of Highways on site improving details.
